SEC Activity Roundup – November Edition

November 23, 2016

This year, one of our goals at the SEC has been to have continuous engagement with the energy community at Stanford, especially outside of our main events like Energy Week and Energy 360. As a result, we’ve had members and officers take part in some very interesting events, and get the opportunity to meet some truly amazing people who are working in energy and sustainability.

al-gore-1280_720Last week, members of the SEC and GSB Energy Club had the opportunity to meet former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, as part of the class Clean Energy Opportunities: Business Models and Innovations. Gore, now Chairman of the Board at Generation Investment talked extensively about preparing for sustainable investment in the future.

Before that, we had our very own VP of BizDev, Madhur Boloor, present his research on solid state photoelectrochemical water splitting at the GCEP Research Symposium 2016. The Symposium went on for two days, and included two research poster sessions, a Stanford Energy Startup Showcase, and an interactive discussion on pathways to deep decarbonization of energy systems. Several SEC members attended, including our VP of Digital & Brand Arnav Mariwala, who noted that the Energy Startup Showcase in particular was very well attended and a great example of getting the wider Stanford community engaged with energy.

2016-10-13Along with attending external events, the SEC communities team has initiated bi-weekly happy hours for students at the Treehouse called Energy & Chill, where anyone can come to meet SEC members or guests that we invite. This quarter, we have had Sally Benson, Arun Majumdar, Dave Danielson, Kurt House, and many others attend at talk to SEC members about their work and experience in energy.
