Green Labs Associate Internship (2009-2010)

 Summary:The Office of Sustainability is looking for a UC Berkeley student to serve as a green labs Associate for the 2009-2010 academic year.  The Associate will support the new green labs initiative, an effort to use multiple strategies and best practices to reduce resource use in campus labs, while maintaining mission and research excellence.  A full-year commitment is preferred, and a total of 100-120 hours of work is possible. This is a paid positions at $10-15/hour. Job Responsibilities:Assist the green labs advisory group in developing and launching the program, through actions such as: §         Conducting 2-5 initial laboratory assessments to catalog existing practices and areas for possible improvement, focusing on energy and water usage, waste reduction, and chemical management (September – December 2009)§         Developing a framework of basic best practices for labs to follow, drawing on existing programs and site visits and assessments of labs, with a focus on practices that yield labor or time efficiencies, as well as those that reduce out of pocket costs for labs (September 2009 – February 2010)§         Assisting the Office of Sustainability in producing outreach materials to communicate these best practices and savings, including the outline of a potential class on sustainable laboratories (February – April 2010).  The Ideal Candidate:·         Be a student currently enrolled at UC Berkeley ·         Is comfortable doing independent research, including one-on-one interviews with a diverse range of people, and presenting on that research to the committee ·         Has experience in a laboratory setting·         Is a self-starter who needs minimal guidance; leadership experience a plus·         Can commit to working 120 hours over the next two semesters How to Apply:Please email your resume, cover letter, and fall schedule to Lisa McNeilly (lmcneilly@berkeley.edu).
