About BERC

The Berkeley Energy & Resources Collaborative (BERC) is a student-led organization which brings together students and community members interested in all aspects of energy and resources. The group acts as a bridge between the many schools, programs, and labs at the University, including the College of Chemistry, College of Engineering, College of Environmental Design, College of Natural Resources, Energy & Resources Group, Goldman School of Public Policy, Haas School of Business, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, School of Law, UC Energy Institute, and others.

BERC's mission is to connect, educate and engage students in order to foster innovation and action.  To that end, BERC:

Connects 2000 members as a part of a broad network of students and alumni from a variety of departments at UC Berkeley and professionals in the fields of energy and resources;

Educates students about the most cutting edge work in energy and resources through organizing events, lectures, and field trips; and

Engages members through providing opportunities to address global energy and resources issues and to collaborate on real-world projects.

History

BERC was founded in 2005 at the Haas School of Business by students with a wide range of interests in energy and resources. They recognized that Berkeley students are surrounded by some of the world’s most advanced energy research through UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The Bay Area also offers access to many of the top venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and energy industry leaders. What had been missing, however, was a broader campus effort to bring together these people, research, and resources.

With that goal in mind, BERC was established to promote on campus collaboration, connect the Berkeley campus to the wider professional and government communities, and to bring this network together to address pressing global energy and natural resource issues. Since then, BERC has grown to become one of the most active student organizations at UC Berkeley, with representatives from across the campus.
